As temperatures continue to rise and pose major health concerns to students, numerous local governments in Nepal have been forced to suspend lessons for a number of days due to an ongoing heatwave that is affecting the Terai and other regions.
According to Chief Administrative Officer Ram Prasad Dhungel, all schools in Biratnagar Metropolitan City, Morang, would be closed from Jestha 28 to 30. If there is relief from the rain, the closure period can be shortened.
Similarly, lessons have been postponed for three days in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City in Bara and Pokhariya Municipality in Parsa. Schools are expected to resume on Asar 1. Concerns about the detrimental impact of intense heat on pupils’ health were raised by officials in several localities.
Ratnnagar Municipality had previously declared a one-day closure due to temperatures in the area reaching 37°C, while Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan had also imposed a three-day closure. In light of the extreme heat, officials stressed that the decision was made to protect kids’ health.
Additionally, many local governments have advised parents to keep their kids inside, stay out of the sun’s direct rays, and, for their own safety, avoid swimming or fishing in rivers and ponds.
As the heatwave continues to disrupt daily life in Nepal’s inner Terai and Terai regions, more districts are anticipated to make similar decisions in the days ahead.
